Making Engineering Accessible to Everyone
Ayah Bdeir founded littleBits in 2011 with a mission to democratize hardware engineering. A Lebanese-Canadian engineer with degrees from the American University of Beirut and MIT, Ayah Bdeir created a platform of color-coded, snap-together electronic modules that let anyone — from elementary school students to professional designers — build circuits and interactive devices without soldering, wiring, or programming. The idea was simple: make engineering as accessible as building with LEGOs.
Ayah Bdeir grew littleBits from a TED Fellow project into a venture-backed company with products sold in over 70 countries, partnerships with major educational institutions, and a library of community-created inventions. littleBits was acquired by Sphero in 2019, extending the platform’s reach into the broader educational robotics market. Ayah Bdeir’s work earned her recognition as a pioneer in the maker movement and STEAM education.
